Let me introduce you to Rodney. Rodney is 47 years old. He grew up on a farm near Colgate Saskatchewan (just South of Weyburn). When I talked to him, he told me that he loved farming!
We first met Rodney through our men’s emergency shelter. Rodney had started staying with us after he was laid off from work. He also told me that “everything really fell apart’ for him when his parents died.
It wasn’t long before we were able to get him his own place again, and today he lives in ‘Harbour House’, one of our affordable housing complexes. Now he has a bachelor suite, and thanks to some other donations that we received, we were also able to bless him with a TV and a couch. He was/is very appreciative of that!
Today, Rodney continues to face his challenges. He also volunteers in our commercial kitchen, and we’ve hired him to do the janitorial work for us at Harbour House. He’s currently waiting for a surgery date to deal with some health issues, after which, once he’s healed up, we’re going to hire him on a part time basis as a men’s emergency shelter worker. That should get him off of social assistance too. We think he’ll do great in that role! After all … I think he can relate to the other guys in the shelter!
