Our Story

Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is a registered Christian charity located within Saskatchewan. We have been serving the province since 1990.

To Rescue people from poverty and addiction by offering the Gospel message through emergency help, such as food, clothing and shelter, and Life Changing Recovery Programs.

History:

For over 30 years Souls Harbour Rescue Mission has been offering help and hope to men, women and children in Saskatchewan and beyond. With a shared history of two organizations blended in purpose to reach out to those in need, we have spent the decades working to meet the needs of those in our community to the best of our ability. In that time we have served over 3 million meals, given away more than 1 million pieces of clothing and provided in excess of 100,000 nights of emergency shelter! In addition to this, those participating in our addiction programs have received more than 120,000 hours of class time and over 2,500 counseling sessions! We have also touched the lives of numerous families through our daycare and youth centre. Thank you for being a partner with us in this meaningful work!

Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission originally began as two different charities. Gerri Carroll founded Souls Harbour Mission House in 1990. She began reaching out to others, in her basement, with a coffee pot and some milk crates as chairs. Within a year she was feeding 50-60 people a day. Eventually, word spread on the street that there was now a safe place to go for a good meal and many more were served on a daily basis. Gerri Carroll passed away in March of 2006, but her legacy lives on.

Ken and Michelle Porter started the Regina RESCUE Mission in 1999. They moved to Regina from Winnipeg with a dream of starting a long-term recovery program here. The first building they rented was a dilapidated ‘crack house’ located at 2076 Scarth Street, and while Gerri continued to feed the hungry, the Porters reached out to the homeless and the addicted. It was in the Scarth Street building that the RRM’s first long-term recovery program was started.
In January of 2007, Souls Harbour Mission House and the Regina RESCUE Mission officially merged to form “Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission.” The two organizations had been working together for a while and realized that they shared many of the same goals. Rather than duplicating services, the two became one.

In December of 2018 the Mission opened the new Gerri Carrol Hope Center on Angus Street. This 7.2 million dollar building replaced the existing structure on Halifax Street, and added another daycare and more affordable housing suites.

In May of 2019 Souls Harbour Rescue Mission absorbed the operations of Moose Jaw’s Riverside Mission, and all of its services and programming. Souls Harbour Rescue Mission now had a physical presence in another Saskatchewan city.

Today, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission provides Saskatchewan with a variety of programs and services including; Men’s Emergency Shelters, ‘Free’ Clothing stores, Meal Programs, Green Earth Daycare, Shayil Home Women’s Addictions Program, Soul Sisters Catering Inc., and 57 suites of affordable housing.
